One Disappointed Player

On October 11th Ali Kamal and I, Tom Young, visited the Casino de Montreal. We have been going there for about 10 years and usually pool our resources. I choose in most instances not to use my casino card unless there are extra rewards for doing it because their rewards are usually cheap. Ali usually puts his in as he enjoys the 2 cents they give you for every 100.00 you play.

On this particular evening the machines favored the house. We were out about 150.00 a piece when our fortunes changed or so we thought. We hit for 600.00 on the 5.00 Top Dollar Slot and continued on to the 1.00 Top Dollar Machine just outside the High Roller Room. We hit for 1000.00 and continued on. Ali went to the $1.00 Wheel of Fortune and I went to the 1.00 Pinball. Ali yelled out to me and everyone was giving him high 5's in the area. He hit the 5x Red 7 5x pay. In laymans terms that is 3000.00. I rushed over and we both awiated the attendant. She came and reset the machine and went to leave. After protesting she explained it was a malfunction and called her Supervisor. To our dismay and after a lot of loud protesting by us and everyone else in the area the Casino suits stuck to their malfunction jargon. Let me say no where in the area or in the Casino as of that night is there any written explanation of what a malfunction is, how it occurs and what the different codes mean. This is why it is bogus. We have argued this to death and have been dealing with a Slot Manager that keeps reiterating that same bogus b.s.

While The Casino de Montreal refuses to change their position and the Casino Manager refuses to come out from under his desk where he is hiding my only choice now is to continue to urge anyone that is thinking of going to this Den of Thieves to consider your options.

I have spoken to 2 other Slot Managers as I having worked i the industry have friends and they both have assured me that while malfunctions occur after explaining that most Casino's to preserve the integrity of the game would pay on the outcome.

Please join our protest and send back your cards and go to other Casino's until this establishment comes off its high horse and recognizes that players have rights. If we had done something to cause the machine to malfunction then I could accept their decision.

This casino is world class from the modern design of the building to the chic interior. There is your regular table games and slots... It's open 24 hours and provides very nice views of The St. Lawrence River.

There is a show bar that seats 500 with nightly entertainment along with a five star restaurant Nuances which offers some amazing seafood in an elegant setting.

You want to dress smart casual as they do not allow jeans.

Montreal's casino is a bit difficult to get to if you are taking the bus/subway, but there is a lot along the way. It is best to make this a stop after or before La Rhond, as they are close to each other. I was AMAZED at the size of the casino, with four to five floors, and it was so flashy, I felt like I was in Vegas. It is a definite must if you are into having some fun and winning some extra money!

After all day touring historic Montreal, we decided it was still too early to go back to the hotel, so why not head on over to the Casino de Montreal for a little nightlife and entertainment. I have to admit my husband likes casinos more than I do, so this entry includes quite a bit of his input as well.

The casino can either be driven to, but then you have parking costs or you can simply take the yellow line metro to Jean Drapeau Station and hop on one of the free buses. The second way is much easier as we have done both. Entry to the casino is free however my husband and I both noticed that on a Saturday night the average minimum bet was $25 on the tables and every day the minimum bet on the slot machines varies from $.25 to $1. Also, another note: weekend evenings are understandably very busy and the casino becomes extremely crowded, so much so that it is difficult to move about freely.

If you have children, remember not to bring them here as the legal age limit for drinking and gambling is 19 years old. Also, if you do not like lots and lots of noise, this is not the place for you as upon entering, be prepared to be assaulted by the sound of at least a hundred or so slot machines ringing loudly.

There are four restaurants located in the casino, Nuances, La bonne carte, Via Fortuna, and L’entre mise, as well as numerous bars that are scattered throughout the entire casino. My husband and I have honestly never stayed long enough at the casino to try any of these restaurants, as we don’t ever seem to have very good luck at this casino. Most of all this casino is like a vertical maze, which I jokingly told my husband that it is meant to keep the guests in, as they can’t find their way back out. It is a very impressive sight when with all the glass staircases in the center of building, the glass elevator, and escalators here and there. In the very end though to me anyways, a casino is a casino is a casino. They’re just about all alike.

"Let’s go to the casino," was our next thought, so we hopped into a cab, and 8 minutes and $9 later we were at the Montreal Casino on Isle Notre Dame--the former site of the French pavilion left over from the World’s Fair of ’67.

We take the escalators to the top floor to see the restaurant Nuances, a five-star restaurant. The menu did look good, but pricey. Pricey was the cost of the two glasses of champagne we shared at the Nuances bar as well.

We then wandered; they have a cool mechanical horse track on a table 10 feet long. The horses actually enter the starting gates and then race around the track. You should always go with your instincts--before the one complete race we watched, my wife chose the green horse, and it did end up winning the race. Too bad our luck did not hold out during the 5 minutes we spent playing the dollar slot machines. It was back to the hotel bar for some more nightcaps.
