Rafting on the St. Lawrence River was a great time: probably not too adventurous if you're a river rat, but more exciting than your average float down the Delaware. Check out the Casino--it's huge! Also, I highly recommend the tram over at the

Quick Tips:

If you're going to go on a pub crawl with the hostel, keep an eye on the others. You might, say, wind up on a deck outside a bar only to realize that everyone else has left.

Best Way To Get Around:

Montreal has an easy-to-navigate subway system. Use it. Cabs are also pretty plentiful, and they aren't all that expensive (especially when you realize the meters are in Canadian dollars! Woohoo!).

The rooms in the hostel are small, but you didn''t come to sit in your room. Each has two sets of bunk beds and a small bathroom with shower, which was a pleasant surprise. I was expecting group bathrooms. The hostel has a small, inexpensive cafe downstairs, along with Internet access, a pool table, and some other little amusements. They also offer activities out on the town, such as the guided bar tour. It''s conveniently located 3 minutes'' walk from the subway (Lucien-L''Allier stop). All in all, a great deal for a cheap trip. Just watch out--our roommate had a little too much fun one night and ended up peeing all over the floor. In the room. Two feet from the bathroom. Hurrah.

Montreal Insectarium

A friend from home recommended the Insectarium, and we weren't sure why. It's a museum totally dedicated to...insects! Good guess! Apparently it's the largest of its kind in North America. And our friend was right. The museum is pretty cool; it's got all sorts of bugs and spiders, living and dead, to ooh and ahh at. I think there are even exhibits where you can play with them (yay!) but we didn't do that. It also has an extensive butterfly collection, and there's even a butterfly house where you can hang around while they fly free in the summer. The museum is located inside the Botanical Gardens, so you have to pay to enter--the question is deciding what you're going to see. You can...Read More

We went to the Botanical Gardens because that's where the Insectarium is located. Afterwards, we hung around because the gardens are beautiful, and the day was absolutely gorgeous. The gardens around the Insectarium were put there specifically to attract local insects in the summer, to complement those inside the building, I guess. There are more gardens than those immediately surrounding the museum, though. We were going to leave after walking around the Insectarium, and head over to the old port, but...we found the tram. Or rather, the tram found us. There's an open-air tram that takes visitors around the gardens, and we, being the three laziest college students you've ever see...Read More

Casino de Montréal

The casino is HUGE. I'm not a big gambler, but I'm pretty sure you can find almost every conventional way to lose money right in one giant building, short of betting on live horses. They've got enough slot machines to suck up the Franklin Mint (though of course they wouldn't take any of the American coins there). Various types of poker, blackjack, roulette, baccarat...what's your pleasure? Bars and restaurants, too. A fun place to spend a night, but if you're not careful that sucking sound you hear will be your life savings flying out of your pockets.

Although the address is in Lasalle, the place is only about 6 km outside the city, so it's not hard to reach. The rafting was actually more intense that I had expected it to be, which was a good thing. The only thing that was slightly annoying was that the guides gave the opening instructions in both French and English, so we had to wait for everyone else to be set before we found out what was going on. And we anticipated the jokes...I guess it's not such a bad idea to give the directions in both, though. Besides, their English is a heck of a lot better than my French will ever be. We hit the Lachine Rapids, right on the St. Lawrence River next to the city. We paddled about 5 km...Read More
