The Governor is an Excellent Choice

I stayed at the Governor for 5 nights at the end of April/beginning of May. My stay could not have been better. I arrived after 11pm and was greeted warmly by reception, which is staffed 24 hours a day. Although I took a taxi from the airport, the hotel is quite accessible by public transportation. (Less than a block from the train that leaves from the airport.) Also, the neighborhood where the hotel is located feels quite safe.
In addition to these practical matters, the hotel itself is absolutely gorgeous and completely comfortable. The lobby has a working fire place, comfy chairs and accents of marble. Don't miss the lovely stained glass dome near reception. An added "perk" is the fact that a Starbucks is adjacent to the lobby.
I was lucky enough to be upgraded to a suite - a total surprise to me that I appreciated no end. The large, pretty windows overlooked a downtown street. The living, bed, and bathroom were all exceedingly inviting. Housekeeping was wonderful.
The hotel is walking distance to city center places of interest and many wonderful restaurants. Although I didn't get a chance to try the highly recommended Jakes Grill which is accessible through the lobby, I suggest visitors try these local eateries: AJ on the Rails, Kenny & Zuke's Deli, and Pastini's.
This was my first visit to Portland and I was traveling alone - key to a successful trip is where one chooses to stay. I recommend the Governor without hesitation. Portland is one of the lovliest and friendliest places I have had the pleasure of visiting. I can't wait to return. Enjoy your travels!!!

We had a nice stay in the Governor Hotel. It has been renovated. It is like a boutique hotel. The room was too warm when we arrived. Someone came up to cool it down immediately. The staff is friendly. The doormen are friendly and helpful. They can tell you where streets and places are located.
The hotel is close to the Maxx Trolley. It is half block down the street. We used it every day.
Jakes Restaurant is located in the hotel. We dined there.
A Starbucks is located in the hotel. We had good hoooot coffee and oatmeal there.
We sat in an area off the lobby, read the newspapers, drank coffee and talked each morning.
You can also check your email in that area.
The workout room is not large. It had adequate machinery. People did not seem to have time to use it.
I would stay there again.

We traveled to Portland to attend baseball games over the weekend. This hotel is beautifully appointed from the lobby to the rooms to the adjoining restaurant. The bed was comfortable, the view wasn't so great, but we didn't come for the view. We enjoyed Sunday brunch in the adjoining restaurant as well as a post game snack and cocktail. If you need to get around Portland the trolley and transit lines are nearby and easier than driving and parking.
Room Was too Small

This older hotel has an impressive lobby, a fitness facility which we didn't see anyone use, a single, soft, comfortable, supportive bed. I slept well on this bed, my partner didn't get a good night's sleep. The room was just too small, The desk area was so small that the coffee maker and supplies were in the closet shelf. The shower in the bathroom was just so relaxing that I didn't want to do anything but lie down. The free complimentary high-speed internet, downtown location, nice quality shampoo, soap and bath gel helps make this a desirable stop. The quality of the room was very nicely done but my complaint is the room is just too small to move around much. The restaurant bar Jake's offers a Happy Hour from 10:30pm till 11:45pm with their Cheeseburger with French Fries for $1.95 with a $2.50 drink minimum is their best deal that the crowds come for.

Great Place to Stay Downtown

We loved staying at The Governor. Check in was quick and simple, the room was nice, and the staff was fabulous. The bed was the most incredibly comfortable one we've slept in ever and we're going to buy one for at home! You can't beat having a Starbucks right downstairs and they deliver for an extra charge. The restaurant had great scents emanating from it and we just wished we'd had an opportunity to try it. We will on our next trip to Portland when we plan to stay there again. There's an entire block of ethnic restaurants across the street on one side and easy access to the freeway. Parking was expensive though there is a much cheaper lot across from Starbucks. This is a nice place to stay. The staff makes it wonderful. You cannot beat coming back after a long day to someone who opens the door and says, "Welcome home, Mr & Mrs ____!" And then parks your car for you!
Nice as it is, The Governor's rooms are a bit austere and could be improved. A heated towel bar, a roomier place to put stuff in the bathroom, more water pressure though the showerhead did a good job with what was there. Our room could have accomodated another armchair. A blower on the gas fire to extend the warmth into the room would have been nice. Why don't hotels bolt a power strip onto the wall by the desk so you won't have to climb under the desk to reach it and so that it doesn't come loose? Some artwork and a small table and lamp in the entryway would have been nice.
We'll definitely book in there for our next stay in a couple of months.
