La Santanera

Another long standing club for Playa del Carmen is La Santanera.

Here expect long lines at the weekend, picky door men, and ever-changing entrance fees. On one night they charged $30 per person, another $30 per couple, and the night we went in $10 each.

Once again, you are paying for the privilege of mingling with the pretty people; be it tourists or the in-crowd from Mexico City here on vacation.

On the roof deck, under cover of a giant Palapa, was a DJ mixing chill-out tunes. Huge masks hang from the straw ceiling and pillows strewn the couches. Ornate, gold-wing chairs are set out at random, and this is the place to see and be seen whilst smoking a Cuban or two.

The night we went to the downstairs club was lame and slow, but it was a Sunday after all. The previous night I was told the club had been banging with deep house, so pick and choose your nights accordingly.
