- This was my first trip to Mexico and I seriously didn't know what to expect considering there are so many warnings in books about traveling to Mexico.

- Mexican's Mayan Riveria stretches 130 kilometres from Cancun south to the historic ruins of Tulum. Located right in the middle is the charming seaside town of Playa del Carmen.

- Playa del Carmen, a fishing village 30 minutes south of Cancun is filled with hotels, hostels, shops, restaurants, bars, internet cafes, discos and mariachis. It has a very international feel with visitors of all ages from the US, Europe, Canada and South America

- Playacar, a subsection in the town of Playa Del Carmen in the state of Quintana Roo (The Riviera Maya). A secret to many Americans who stop at Cancun for fun in the sun. Just a short drive, no more than 30 minutes away, lies paradise.

- Just 30 minutes from the frenzied pace of Cancun, you'll find a more low key "taste" of Mexico. No high risers here....the highest building is 4 stories high. We spent our days at the Iberostar Tucan when we weren't off exploring what Mexico has to offer.

- For years, Playa was nothing more than dirt roads and a few thousand inhabitants. Hurricane Gilbert changed the face of Playa, with entrepreneurship and some 70,000 people. Locals argue Playa’s not the same, but its still lovely, comfortable, and perfectly situated to see all of the Yucatan region.

- Is this place all they say it is--or just the latest gringo hype? Keep watching this space--I just got here!
