Riu Yucatan Playa Del Carmen Mexico

I just got back from a weeks stay at the Riu Yucata in Playa Del Carmen Mexico. I was VERY DISAPPOINTED in this resort and want to warn everyone NOT to stay there. Here is a long list of problems I had during my stay:
Rooms look nothing like what they advertise on their website.
The rooms are small, smell of mildew and have very hard beds.
Upon my arrival I noticed the shower light was burned out and the shower head was broken. A guy from maintenace came by, looked at it and never came back to fix it. Mini bar/fridge was lame and was never re-stocked unless I asked for it. The rooms were in desperate need of a face lift. Old style tile, paint and decorations. The lamps were rusty and there were stains on the walls.
Resort grounds are mediocre and the pools are dirty. Their "signature" restaurants in the resort are not very good and the food quality within the resort is again mediocre to say the best. The staff is for the most part unfriendly and one night during dinner insulted my girlfriend for being with a "white boy". My girlfriend is Hispanic and I'm Caucasian.
We tried to enter the Riu Palace next door just to see what it was like, and whether we would stay there on our next visit. We were denied entry and told we couldn't even look around.
The biggest complaint I have about this resort is the employees and the fact they go out of their way to make it inconvenient for you. They act as if they are doing you a favor by waiting on you and would prefer you not bother them at all. I'm not a picky person, but when I spend money at a resort that is suppose to provide me services for that money, I expect to receive it.
Stay away from this place !!!
Overall very nice

The only complaint that we have is the restocking of the mini bar. They say it will be stocked every other day. However, we had to track down staff to get more beer, they are quick to take the tips but not so quick do what you request. The only other thing that distrubed us was a couple days getting back from the beach between 4-5 pm the room was still not cleaned and no fresh towels. Other than the above 2 minor complaints over all this was a wonderful vacation, staff was awesome of course we had our favorite bartenders * & *
there are not enough words to praise these 2 guys they were awesome. Food was very good, Beach front amazing. Overall a wonderful vacation would not hesitate to stay at Riu Yucatan again.

Most everything is pretty clean; the grounds are beautiful; the staff is very friendly; the buffet food is a little above average. It was nice to be able to visit the other nearby Riu hotels.
Our room smelled musty- sticks to your clothes and luggage; the front desk isn?t much help, maid service is erratic- seem to always forget something; swimming pool had film on surface, bottom and sides were slippery. Sit-down restaurants disappointing- steakhouse served about a 3/8? thick steak, although tasty.
The only non-smoking area is in the buffet. If you are a non-smoker or travel with children, you can?t get away from it anywhere else. Men, bring long paints, restaurants require them although many go in with shorts.
I would have a hard time recommending to a friend.
Pleasant stay

No elevators at this facility...we got a third floor which was inconvenient for a family with a 10 mo. old baby. Gardens were beautiful. The beach is very nice. A little over crowded.Pool water was dirty...staff at front desk not very friendly. Food was good but waiters not catering good.
a safe mexican vacation

Very pleasant, but really slow and not always helpful staff. Lots of rules for the guests. Beds very hard, ask for foam topper. You will have to ask more than once (for everything). Lots of food choices, really no tipping, but you will pay through the nose for a local phone call or a cab. Very nice facility, plenty to do. Terrible damp, things do not get dry. Far more for families and couples than for singles.
