Lower Dells Duck Tours

The ducks are WWII vehicles that take you on back roads with bumps and hills (the kids love that part), and they drive you into the river for a reasonable distance. The whole ride is about an hour to an hour and a half. They leave every 10 minutes from 8am through about 7pm. The lines, even at peak time, are pretty reasonable. It's a fun ride. The drivers have their corny jokes, which seem to be crowd pleasers.

Lower Dells Duck Tours

The Dells boat tours are a cornerstone attraction of the Dells. This tour takes you down the Wisconsin River on the bottom side of the dam. It takes approximately an hour, and you are able to see unique sandstone formations and are told about the Dells' past and how it came to be. A captain pilots the boat while a tour guide narrates and points out the unique formations such as pulpit's rock with a baby grand (it does look like a petrified grand) and hawk's beak. This tour does duplicate what we saw and heard on the Ducks but does travel father down river. Again, a guidebook was offered on the lower Dells at $4. We had taken the 7pm tour (which is the last of the day), and it was so relaxing to watch the sunset as we cruised. The drink we purchased at the dock at the Mexicali Rose, which a sign suggested before we boated, helped us to enjoy the finale to our first night in the Dells. Again, as noted in this journal, we used our Dells coupons book, which saved us. Total lower, upper, and Ducks was $74.50, and our child was free. Tours start at 10am and run on the hour until 7pm.

Dells Boat Tours

There are three different boat tours from which to choose. You can take the complete tour along the Wisconsin River. There is a two hour Upper Dells tour which includes the boat as well as a walk through Witches Gulch and see the Stand Rock dog jump. The Lower Dells tour is an hour long boat ride which features sandstone cliffs and rock formations. You can buy a combination ticket for both tours for $24. 25. Or you can see only the Upper Dells for $17.75 or only the Lower Dells for $14. 75. If you do the combination ticket, when you finish one tour, you board a shuttle bus which takes you to the other location where you board the boat the rest of your tour. Then the shuttle will take you back to where you started. Because the weather was so bad while we were there, we took only the Lower Dells tour. It was a nice boat ride but the Dells were no where near as spectacular as we expected them be.

There is also Dells Jet Boat Adventure. This is a 700 horse powered, 40 passenger ride. It races down the Wisconsin River at speeds up to 40 miles per hour. This boat ride was not running at the time we were there.

The Dells Boat Tours also offers a Sunset Cruise of the upper Dells. There is a dinner tour or a wine and cheese tour. Both are about two hour rides. For more information on the Dells Boat Tours see . The boarding place for the boats is right in the middle of all the amusements. One would have no trouble at all finding it.

Lower Dells Duck Tours

The tour we went on below the dam (the lower dells) was on amphibious vehicles that once belonged to the U.S. military. The trip was not quite as scenic as the upper dells tour, but it had more variety. We saw several forest settings, including several deer. We saw other natural wonders, and we entered/left the water in several places in the "duck" we rode.
