- Although located 320km north of the modern Sudanese border, Aswan's greatness stems from being the historic frontier between ancient Nubia and Egypt.

- This journal focuses on the next segment of our month long honeymoon to Egypt and Jordan, continuing from Cairo. We spent three nights in Aswan and one night in Abu Simbel. Thankfully we had studied a little Arabic, which came in handy several times, in fact necessary for communicating with locals when we were the only tourists in a number of situations... such as the only guests staying in the Nefertari Hotel in Abu Simbel, riding in a felucca, walking along Corniche Avenue, or wandering around a Nubian village on Elephantine Island...

- Aswan offers the past and the present of Egypt, from granite quarries that supplied material for the obelisks we had seen to the impressive Aswan dam that changed the country and caused many monuments to be moved, in an effort to save such testimonies of Egypt's past glories.

- I stayed at the Island Oasis Hotel, a very wonderfull resort in the middle of the Nile. It's a short ride to many sights, or just relax on the resort. Plan on spending a little extra to get the best guides and try the food - it's great.

- Feeling more African than the rest of Egypt, Aswan lies 550 miles from Cairo & 133 miles from Luxor. If you think you've seen Egypt by visiting Cairo, think again. Wondrous things await you in this southernmost part of Upper Egypt.

- Aswan is a freak of nature, with annual rainfall of zero and Summer temperatures reaching 50 celsius plus, but it’s also one of the balmiest places in the world in February. See the sights or just sit back and enjoy the Nile slipping through the desert.

- I was on a tour with Imaginative Traveller and Aswan was part of the itinerary. We took the overnight train from Cairo and had a couple of days to visit the area before we boarded our boat headed to Luxor.
