If you take 8th Street West in Miami, this street turns into Tamiami Trail. On the left hand side you will find the entrance to Shark Valley, one of the three official entrance to the Everglades National Park. Here you can go biking or take a tram to see more of the Everglades. If you go biking, make sure that you take lots of water with you and that you are armed with bug repellent. You can assured though that you will enjoy the ride. Half way of the loop there is a watch tower which provides a nice break on a hot day.

One advise: don't teach your kid how to ride a bike here! A few years ago some parents thought the straight path was ideal for some riding lessons for their son. The child rode into the water and landed on top of an alligator who bit him!

Too close for my comfort. Although the scenery is unmatched any where, I am not comfortable that close. It all depends on your level of anxiety. There were several couples and singles enjoying the trip. It is the only place I know of that offers this type of experience.

Take a walk on the boardwalk through an dense Hammock at Shark Valley. Birds, fish, turtles, alligators everywhere. The coolness of the shade was much appreciated. You can feel very much alone and secluded even though you are only a few hundred feet from the information center.

It is a 15 mile round trip tram tour with guide. It is an educational experience that my entire family was able to enjoy. We learned about the wildlife and plantlife that we, as South Floridians, drive past daily. The Everglades has no match in the entire world. It is it's own ecosystem. We learned a lot about the encroachment of civilization and the effect it is having on the area. The Everglades is actually a very slow running river that goes from Lake Okeechobee to the Gulf of Mexico. The tram takes you out to an observation tower which allows you to see for miles over the flat land. There are also many aligators that congregate nearby.
