There’s a lot going for Salzburg. The hills are cool and green. The palaces, cathedrals and squares are as impressive as anywhere in Europe. And Mozart, who’s turned 250 this year, reigns supreme.

Salzburg meant different things to myself, my sister, and my niece. I wanted to see the Salzkammergut area, Bea wanted to shop, and Tracey wanted to visit locales from the movie The Sound of Music. Fortunately we managed to do it all within our three-day visit.

Although its claim to fame is as the birthplace of Mozart, this city has so much more to offer, like its internationally renowned baroque architecture and beautiful snow-capped countryside. Plus it has one of Europe’s most amazing fortresses and is home to Steigl beer!

Austria's home town of baroque and the birthplace of the talented Mr. Mozart is picturesquely sheltered by surrounding mountains and straddles the Salzach River. On our visit, we looked past the Mozart and Sound of Music tourist attractions and found the wonders of an antique, alpine city.

Salzburg certainly has “charm,” but “enchantment” is what possessed me. Beauty and history aren’t enough for a city to enchant: great, eccentric talent must haunt it. Ghosts of Mozart and the Hapsburg rulers revealed themselves to me in colorful detail and symphonies with “too many notes.”
