Not a Good Value!

The Sheraton Maui should be 3 star...calling it 4 star is a joke. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that management does not have control of this property. The front desk staff not only didn't have the reservations correct, they twice tried to get 6 of us onto one room, they were clearly not interested in saying "hello" or helping us with our bags. We had to carry all our own bags from a downstairs lobby up to the main lobby which was a very long way. As we approached the front desk, one young lady saw us coming from about 20 yards and then buried her face in her computer screen and did not acknowledge us for the longest time until I spoke up and asked her if she could help us...which she couldn't and had to get a manager after about 20 minutes of not doing her job.

Anyway, the $500/night room was a small upgrade from a Hampton Inn, although the view of the ocean and the island (Lenai) was pretty but the tiny balcony you are given to sit on is a joke...about three feet deep!

The restaurants, there are only two indoors and two bar/lunch outdoors, are too small to accomodate the number of guests at the hotel. Your wait for breakfast/lunch/dinner at the main restaurant will be 20-40 minutes at any time it normal to eat. There is a japanese restaurant there also but there are only three tables...very tiny and reservations are hard to come by unless you do it three days out.

The food was ok on the resort but very expensive for what you get. Breakfast buffet was $25 per person but the buffet did not come close to being as nice as any city hotel sunday brunch for the same or less money in any other US city. The dinner at Black Rock, the main resteraunt was just barely average in quality but certainly overpriced for what you end up getting. My daughter ordered macaroni and cheese and it was completely covered in some kind of bread crumbs which i couldn't even stand...you would think Mac & cheese for kids would be something they wouldn't screw up! We did go off the resort for a few dinners in Lenai and found some great places.

The bright point for the resport is the waiters and waitresses at all the restaurants and the people that run the water and beach desk. All of these people were outgoing, pleasant and wanted to make sure you were having a good time...the front desk staff needs to take a lesson from these people!.

Anita, the concierge, was delightful and very helpful!

Now the real deal. Upon Checkout there were surprises that we read about on other travel sites. We checkout out of one room a day early, we had four rooms and two of us left early so we consolidated to save $500. We had everything out of the room by 11am and upon checkout the front desk wanted to force us to pay for the room and said we didn't our bags out until 3pm. I know better and the even had the gaul to call my wife a LIAR when she said everything was out by 11am. Unbelievable!! Then they tried to charge us an additiona $50 per room per day when our original reservation showed $500 per night. We had to get a fax sent from home to verify that and still they argued with us...again Unbelieveable!

Bottom line...I would NEVER EVER return to the Sheraton Maui, probably wouldn't jump at a trip to Hawaii again. Too expensive for the location. I could have spent 50% less, taken half the time to get there and had a much more relaxing vacation by going to Mexico or even somewhere in Florida.

We paid ~180-200 dollars per night. This hotel is very nice. When you walk in, they will give you the Lei flowers. Well, it made my neck itchy but it's warming. It is located on a big black rock. They do have shows about the native on the black rock every night. The restaurant is good and price is reasonable ($30-40 per head without drinks). The room is very nice as well. It's not too far from Lahaina. We could not see sea turtles even we went to snorkeling trip, but we saw them many times from the hotel room. We went out swimming once and the turtle swam just right in front of us. Overall this is a good hotel.

Sheraton Maui - Black Rock Rocks!

Sheraton Maui - Black Rock Rocks!

Perhaps it was the less-than-stellar experience on Oahu, but the Sheraton Maui blew me away with the property design, customer service and all-around relaxed feeling that emanated from the resort. It could be the best hotel I’ve stayed in.

When we arrived at the hotel, we were greeted and presented with the ‘easy-check-in’ attitude and a beautiful orchid lei. Valet parking for our rental car was complimentary on the first day (amen!) so we could easily pull up in front of the open-air lobby and unload our bags.

Since I was there celebrating my birthday, I asked if the Sheraton would be willing to upgrade my room. They were very accommodating, and set us up in an oceanfront room which also looked out on the pool and the well-manicured lawns.

The bellman gathered our bags and escorted us to our room, all the while pointing out some of the hotel features and where they were located (the fitness center, which is included in your resort fee of $18 a day, as is self parking; the guest laundry, the spa, etc.) I’d never had such a detailed instruction to a hotel – it would’ve taken us our whole stay to figure some of this out on our own, if ever.

The pool was uniquely designed, with a keiki (kid’s) pool on one side and the adult pool on the other, connected through "rivers", one of which had a small waterslide and waterfall. They’re quite stringent about hotel guests having identifier bands, and check often to make sure non-guests aren’t using the pool and lounge chairs. As with most resorts, get there early to get a prime spot, but if you’re not picky about where you sit, you’ll find a chaise.

Since it’s uniquely situated on Black Rock it’s a prime beach snorkeling spot, and there’s a convenient rental stand for all your snorkel needs (albeit pricier than you could get elsewhere in close-by Lahaina). Additionally, the Sheraton has a nightly cliff-diving/torch lighting ceremony, with fire dancers on Friday nights.

The Sheraton really promotes the activities it features, from special speakers and ukulele lessons (which were really fun). The concierge desk was a lifesaver in helping me unclutter my excursion schedule and booking us on a great whale watching/snorkeling cruise.

The Sheraton is also a 10-minute walk from Whaler’s Village, a shopping center with a few restaurants and many shops. I will note that the food at the resort is pricy, so either head here or drive 5 minutes into Lahaina for more options.

When I researched my Maui stay, the biggest debate was which Starwood resort to stay in, the Westin Maui or the Sheraton (the Web was split 50/50). Having seen the Westin, I can say that the Sheraton has a prettier design and more of a laid back attitude. The two properties allow you to use each other’s amenities, but I never saw the need to leave the Sheraton. It would be my choice and recommendation to anyone.

The room had an excellent garden view and ocean view with a balcony. The room had the comforts of home and a fridge hidden in the room where you would not expect. That adds to the dignity of the stay.

Expensive beachfront hotel on a strip with other big hotels such as Hyatt and Westin. Hotel had a beautiful pool which we used every day. Very nice room with an ocean view. We were upgraded for free, as our original accommodations (without a view) were unavailable.
