Great place to stay

We were booked into PIkes with a land/cruise tour, so we weren't sure what the accomodations would be like. We were very pleased, decent sized room, clean, nice bathroom. The place had an "Alaskan" look/feel to it, which we were pleased with. After al, we're in Alaska! We were located on the 2nd floor, balcony with a river view. The Pike's Restaurant located right next door had wonderful meals, which we ate there 2 times. We ate out on the patio next to the river, and the next night asked to be seated indoors, as it was a little colder. The food was great! Would do it again next time. We ate breakfast one morning at the hotel. The food was wonderful, anything you'd want (buffet), and presented beautifully. There was confusion in the seating, and people weren't around to take care of the many people waiting to be seated, but eventually they straighted it all out. I'd stay here again.
Shabby treatment

Pike's reservation was part of a package and we had a paid voucher for the night there. When we arrived in Fairbanks, we were told we were being put in another facility because Pike's was filled up. We were assured it was as nice as Pikes. After a very long wait, Pike's van picks up up and deposits us at the other motel. No lounge, no restaurant, very small room, certainly not the type of facility we had signed up for and paid for. We were told to use the Pike's van. Called for van to take us to dinner. After very long wait, called again. Were told van was leaving immediately to pick us up. A minute later, observed van driving on main road to airport. Called again, and were told van was just leaving to pick us up (obviously untrue). Took van from motel we were put in, shared with another couple that were "bounced" by Pike's and were equally unhappy. Later talked to Pike's General Manager and asked for a refund. She assured us she would call back. Told her we were staying at Sophie's Station (great place) for next 4 nights. No call from Pike's. Left 3-4 messages on voicemail with no response. Very shabby treatment.

Pike's is located on the Chena River right across from the International Airport. Don't let that scare you, the sounds of the airplanes are not noticeable in the rooms. Even with the lobby doors open during the day, the plane's engines could not be heard inside. And the lobby is a study in taxidermy with bears, moose, and other critters covering the walls and ceiling.
The rooms are large and comfortable. There are several electrical outlets that are easily accessed. We were able to charge the phone, camera, and laptop without having to hunt for an outlet. The staff are wonderful. We asked if there was a scale available to weigh our luggage before heading to the airport and the bell captain brought one up to our room on a luggage rack. He helped us weigh our pieces and waited while we reshuffled items to make everything under 50lbs.
The staff are willing to give you ideas as to how to spend your time in Fairbanks. They will even make calls for you to make reservations if they are not busy with "hotel business".
There is a buffet breakfast in the morning that is very good. The pre-scrambled eggs were the only ones that were neither too runny or too hard. There were several juices to choose from and potatoes and sausage. They had several miniboxes of cereal available, and hot cereal for those who preferred that.
Dinner could be had at the restaurant across the parking lot. The deck affords a great view of the river and is a wonderful place to eat if it is not too breezy. Hubby and I split sandwiches so we could taste both. He ordered the Chicken and I ordered the Halibut burger. Both were very tasty and filling. The Chicken was tender and the roll was "to die for". The Halibut burger was flaky and served with a very good tarter sauce. the fries on both plates were crunchy yet soft on the inside. Wonderful food and extremely filling.
Walk back to your room or join others on the patio/bar next to the restaurant. Either way you are sure to enjoy Pike's.

We stayed here for 3 nights and loved the atmosphere. There was a large area downstairs with a big tv/dvd player. We played movies for our kids while we sat around the tables and chatted. The front desk had fresh cookies and coffee every night and the breakfast from 6-9 was great.
