Great Location--Tries to be "too trendy"

  • September 2, 2007

You know the feeling when you go to a totally empty resturant and you are told you cannot be seated? This was the feeling that we got at the Mercer. Perhaps it is just too trendy for us, but we travel a lot and this place, although nice, is nothing special. The location is great, but we just got the feeling that we were not wanted or welcome. That said, I would stay here again for the location if the prices were a little more reasonable.

If you want to feel like a star, then the Hotel (The Mercer) is perhaps one of the best choices. First, it is located in the heart of SoHo, so you can partake in some high-end shopping and dining. Second, you are very likely to actually see more than one famous person. While we were sitting in the guest-only lounge area, we saw several famous movie stars. The Hotel does a great job of creating a space for guests only and making you feel special. Third, the rooms are amazing. Let's forget about the price for a second, because our room was one of the coolest places I have ever stayed. It had about 1,000 square feet, which included a sitting area, a huge bathroom, and an ultra-cool bed area that was separated from the other rooms by a massive, leather, sliding curtain. When my girlfriend saw the room, she was speechless for about two minutes (no small feat for her). The weather was pretty horrible, so we holed up in the room and had a truly decadent weekend.

The food at the hotel is amazing. In and of its own right, the Mercer Kitchen is one of the nicer restaurants in SoHo. I have eaten there several times, and the room services provided access to the same great food.

A few nice touches:
- the hotel provides nice umbrellas for all guests when it is raining
- the flowers are amazing
- the library is super-cool
- the access to cool CDs and everything you need for a romantic, sexy stay

I definitely highly recommend this hotel as an ultra-cool, decadent place to stay. The price was off-the-charts (and fortunately my company was paying), but it is worth a splurge for a special occasion.

Wow, stayed here on my last 2 visits and it is some hotel! It is pricey but for me worth it for the location and the room style. I recommend this one highly. The room size is very good; data line for laptop; functional but small bathroom (no bath); great lobby area with some very interesting books on the wall (like a library wall); and, of course, the dining room is Mercer's Kitchen. Room service was flexible and quick. Staff helpful and friendly (or was that just my Australian accent making them smile??).
