Description: What to see:
Once in the park, stop at the
visitor's center to get a map and information on the park. Next follow the signs to the
castle ruins. In 1905, a rich business man from Kansas City bought 2400 acres of land here and set forth to build a castle to rival those in Europe. He chose a
stunning location on the top of a mountain
overlooking the lake and brought artisans from Europe to build the castle. Sadly, in 1942 it burnt to the ground but much of the stonework remains and it is worth not only a visit for what used to be but also because of the spectacular view.
Drive up to the car park right by the castle remains. It is about a
800 foot walk from the car park to the castle ruins up a very slight incline. There are several "resting" places (shaded benches) along the way as well as several nice
look out points onto the valley below and an informational sign or two. Everyone in our family from my elementary school nephews to my 83-year-old grandparents was able to enjoy the site. The remains are quite beautiful in the sunlight and the surrounding countryside is also worth a look. There is also a
boardwalk path and steps up to the
80 ft water tower (you can't go inside) on the other side of the car park.
Directions:
The park is located five miles southwest of Camdenton just off US-54 on Route D.
