Relaxing at "home": We rented a four-bedroom home on the Tan Tar A estates. Located on one of the many golf courses in the area, the townhouse had a huge living/dining room, screened in porch with dining for four and a view out on to the Lake, our own hot tub and bbq grill. We brought our own games, however, the house also had five large TV’s, cable, and two VCR/DVD combos. Enjoying the Tan Tar A Resort: Our townhouse rental also came with complimentary access to the Tan Tar A resort. We had access to a private pool a short drive from our townhouse as well as to the activities offered at the re...Read More

The Condo: Overview: For our extended family (14 persons) we rented a 4 bedroom condo in the Tan-Tar-A estate complex. The condo was a free-standing house built on the side of a hill along the golf course. It was actually three "units" that could be rented out separately. We enjoyed our stay immensely. It was great to have somewhere as comfortable as home to relax in while on vacation. The bedrooms: On the entry level was a two-bedroom apartment that had one en-suite bedroom with two double beds that opened onto the back patio complete with private hot tub. The spacious en-suite master bedroom was upstair...Read More

The Feed Lot

The food: Although the name may bring up images of the trough, the Feed Lot is a reasonable choice for lunch or dinner. We called ahead since we had 14 in our party and they were able to easily accommodate us. The fare is mainly steak and ribs oriented although everyone in our family was able to find something to eat. The catfish platter was popular. Others ordered ribs, steak, cheese quesadillas (for the vegetarian), pasta, and one peanut butter and jelly sandwich with fries for the 8-year-old. All of the portions were very large. The restaurant: The decor varies from cutesie to cowboy to a random stuffed wildcat on a fake tin ...Read More

The Tan-Tar-A resort is a huge complex. Ask for a map at the guard booth when you enter the resort or at the information desks at any of the resort's hotels. Swimming: Along with the private pool near our condo, we also visited the main pool by the marina. This was the better place to bring energetic kids. Here there was a big pool plus a second pool which the huge waterslide dropped people into. Also at the main pool were professional life guards (the private pool did not have a life guard) and towel services. There were also about 100 deck chairs, some of which were placed off the deck onto the sand so people could have a good view of the lake. The main pool was more ...Read More

Yay for horseback riding: Horseback riding was a great way to explore the trails of the Lake of the Ozarks State Park. We were seven people (four adults and two elementary school age children). We called ahead to make reservations and then drove the 30 minutes from our condo to the state park. The staff was very friendly and the dirt was very muddy. The horses were of varying size, which was good so that smaller people's legs weren't stretched too much. The horses were very tame and needed little direction to follow the horse in front of them along the trail. No riding experience is necessary. Even when something exciting happened, like a deer jumping out in front of...Read More

What to see: Once in the park, stop at the visitor's center to get a map and information on the park. Next follow the signs to the castle ruins. In 1905, a rich business man from Kansas City bought 2400 acres of land here and set forth to build a castle to rival those in Europe. He chose a stunning location on the top of a mountain overlooking the lake and brought artisans from Europe to build the castle. Sadly, in 1942 it burnt to the ground but much of the stonework remains and it is worth not only a visit for what used to be but also because of the spectacular view. Drive up to the car park right by the castle remains. It is about ...Read More

Osage Beach Premium Outlets

Attraction | "Factory Outlet Village Shopping Mall"

Located on US-54 in Osage Beach, MO, this Premium Outlets (apparently a brand name too of outlet malls) has over 110 stores including Gap, Ralph Lauren, Coldwater Creek, Eddie Bauer, Pflatzgraff, Tommy Hilfiger, Reebok, and so on. A full store listing is available here. What I enjoyed most was the cute decor of the shopping center and the ease at finding parking, which is quite plentiful. The shopping complex is extensive and wraps around the parking lots such that there is a lot of parking nearby each store. The downside is that you really need to drive between stores unless the ones you want t...Read More
