Namdaemun Market

Namdaemun market is a sprawling market area, only a short walk from the main Seoul train station. It's a lot of fun to walk through. Its not just a market just for tourist souvenirs, but is really full of shops and stalls for the local populace. Nearly everything you can imagine is sold here: souvenirs, clothes, food, handbags, wallets, and more.

It's both a good place to buy souvenirs as well as more practical items (clothing, leather goods) that you want to find at a bargain price. It's a lot more fun than any US department store ever was!

Fake stuff GALORE! There's every name brand you can think of (including Abercrombie). We walked about 3 miles and there's still more!!! We're going back next week to see everything later. Did you know they bring out the fake stuff late at night so that they don't get caught by the police? But all the fake stuff lines the streets, too! And if people know this, why don't the police come by at night?

Nandehmun is another major swapmeet area (with lots of fake stuff). I got to shop around again and found a GREAT place--the ACCESSORIES WHOLESALE FLOOR!!!! All the accessories were REALLY cheap, BUT you have to say you're going to sell it at a store. Otherwise, they jack up the prices. They don't know if you're lying unless you can't lie. You can buy earrings for $1 to $5, but only if you bargain with them and buy a lot. If buying only a couple pairs, they'll charge you more.

This market is easily accessible & a good chance to see Koreans going about their daily business as well as having the opportunity to buy souvenirs. It is very crowded - so don't go if you don't like them. The prices can be cheaper than the more western It'aewon - but there is probably not as much variety or user friendly service.
