Mumm's Winery

Imagine sitting out on the deck with nothing but green in front of you sipping the bubbly. Seeing the Napa valley fields from the outdoor seating area at Mumm's still has a fond place in my memory. A little like going to a nice restaurant rather than going to a winery, the flutes were filled and glasses clinked.

Make sure you try the Cuvee M in blue. Very nice.

Mumm was yummy, yummy, yummy. I personally like the sparkling wines so this was a stop I saved my tongue for. You can find some of their wines in your local Cost Plus World Market. Cuvee' M is my favorite and it's not very expensive, about $20 a bottle. There DVX also great a little farther down the line at $55 a bottle. Their Santana DVX is special and made with the help of Carlos Santana himself. Some of these can only be ordered directly from Mumm.

Hubby and I had a couple bottles of the Brut Prestige shipped since we would not be able to buy it locally. Great snappy taste full of flavor, no after bite, very nice all around. There gift shop at the vineyard is spectacular. They have some of the coolest gift ideas, wine geared serving wares as well as art pieces, dog collars and kids wear. Lots to look at, you just want to buy it all. Their online gift shop I'm sorry to say has very little in it. I was truly hoping to buy some of the great things once I got home (so I didn't have to carry on the plane) but I was disappointed to see I would have to go back to Mumm to buy all the cools stuff I saw.

Oh Well, I got the wine and that was most important! The winery itself I did not get to tour. They have an art gallery that features artist, the current was Ansel Adams. The Veranda overlooks the Valley which presents a calming comfortable rich view as you taste your bubbly. If you get to Napa go to Mumm. You won't be disappointed.

We made Mumm an activity because they had a special exhibit of the World Press Photo award winners from 1950-2000 on display in the art gallery. It was a very dramatic selection of photos. The gallery exhibits change every few months; call the winery at 707-942-3434 or 800-686-6272 to find out what is on. In addition to the changing shows, there is a permanent exhibit of historic Ansel Adams photos of the Mumm winery and vineyards. I was not that impressed with the winery photos--they were good examples of industrial photography, but the photos of the vineyards were striking. Definitely worth a trip to see the work of this master of black and white photography.

The tasting room is delightful. In most wineries, you "belly up to the bar" and are poured your tastes. Here, you sit in a small cafe and order your tastes from a menu. Three half-flutes of champagne are offered at $8 and there are more expensive selections as well.

My husband and I are pinot noir fans, and had read that Mumm was making a pinot noir, so we chose that to taste ($2.50). The man doing the pouring asked if we liked pinot, and then brought over small, half-sized flutes into which he poured a sparkling pinot noir (methode Champaignoise) for us to taste. It is not shipped and is sold only in the winery. Although it looked like black cherry soda, it was delightful -- fruity but not sweet. We even bought some to take home; we never would have known about it if he had not poured us a sample.

There is a winery tour offered, but we did not take it.

Mumm features sparkling wines that are a definite change to the others I'd been tasting. The building and views as we pulled into the parking lot were beautiful but I almost pulled out when I saw all the tour buses. Fortunately, my fiance talked me into staying. We really enjoyed this experience. Unlike other wineries, Mumm doesn't have a tasting bar that you stand at. Instead you're seated at a table inside the building or on the patio and brought a tasting menu. The tastings aren't free but very affordable. I got a sample of their 3 popular sparkling wines served in small flutes for only $7.00. After our tasting we went inside a charming gift shop to pay our tab and were offered a membership to the Mumm Club. It's free to join and you get that day's sample free. You can also come back and sample for free again, plus get discounts, etc. Needless to say, we joined. You can cancel at anytime - that catch is that if you don't cancel you're sent 2 bottles of sparkling wine and it's billed to your credit card every month or so. If you love the wine it's worth the price. If not, it's still worth it to join for the day and cancel when you get home. Contact Mumm at 707-963-1133
