Super Value

Located just 2 short blocks from the Powell St. BART station, the Metropolis could not be more convenient. The staff is friendly and helpful, and everything about the hotel's interior is clean and fresh. The one downside is the main entrance, which is on Turk St., not San Francisco's most glamorous vista. We got into the habit of walking out the back exit, cutting through the parking lot, which then sends you up Mason St. towards the friendlier edge of the Union Square District. The rooms are compact but comfortable. We thought it was a lot of value for a modest price.

Me and my friends were very impressed with this hotel. It was clean and well taken care of. The staff was very friendly. We got there a few hours before check in and I asked, just out of couriosity, if it was possible to check in early, the lady at the front desk said it wouldnt be a problem if thye had a room open that I had booked and they checked to see if they had a room open already and they did. The room was really nice and beds were very comfortable. The room itself is not very large, we didnt spend much time there so it didnt bother us, for some it might be a problem. The hotels location is not that great, there were a lot of bums. One of them even passed out on the sidewalk in front of our hotel. Overall we were very satisfied with our stay at the Metropolis and I will definately stay there again.

Hotel was nice. Rooms do not have air condition and heater was broken on our stay. It was cold in room at night due to heater broken. Television service was down for both days we stayed. Front desk was great. Non-guest usage of public bathroom, it was not kept up and was basically unsanitary!

Good Value, Bring Your Own Security

What's that saying - "you get what you pay for?" This hotel is a great value, but located just inside the Tenderloin district. It's impossible to enter or leave the property without being accosted by an unsavory character, and there was actually a shooting just outside the property hours before we checked in (which we read about a day later in the newspaper). Inside, the property is actually pretty nicely updated. The rooms are tiny -- mine was about 12x12 and I could touch both walls of the bathroom at the same time. Two people would have a hard time moving around the room at the same time, and I don't know where you would put the second suitcase. It's also loud -- lots of streetnoise. Hallway smelled like smoke. And no air conditioning which makes the rooms kind of dank. But, it's within close walking distance of public transportation and great shopping at the Westfield Center. Generally a good rate for that location. Good water pressure, nice towels and sheets. And you do have to swipe your keycard to take the elevator to the rooms, so there's some semblance of security. As long as your expectations are correctly set, this hotel can be a good option for a value traveler.

Don't Stay Here

While this hotel is a "good value", you take your personal safety in hand. During my stay, there was a murder four blocks away. There is no doorman the only security I saw was in talking to front desk attendant or reading a book. This hotel needs someone outside 24/7.
