Oak Mountain State Park is a gem of a find just 25 minutes south of Birmingham off of I 65. Take exit #246: 119/Cahaba Valley Rd. and go west, taking your first left (follow the signs). For details, check out www.alabamatrail.org which will also tell you about other hiking spots. Oak Mountain is a great day hike place, with the average trail about 7 miles. Trails range from easy to difficult. The 1.9 Peavine Trail (green blazes) is difficult but worth it when you get to Peavine Falls.
It is $2/person to get in and about 2 miles from the entrance you can buy a highlighted topo from the visitor center for $.50! It gives all trail info and parking areas. There is even a .3 mile nature trail, perfect for family outings. All in all it is a well maintained state park. Go Alabama.
News: On January 5, 2002, the Sierra Club is hosting a day hike there. Meet at the North Trailhead, 7 miles from the park enterance. BYO H2O and lunch. Cheers.
