A short, narrow, rough dirt road leads south to Drake’s Estero from Sir Francis Drake Blvd a little more than halfway on the trip from the Bear Valley Visitor’s Center to the Point Reyes Lighthouse. At the end of the road is special treat - Johnson’s Oyster Farm, a private business that started in 1957. Here, you can take a short tour of the grounds, watch the process of growing oysters, and – best of all - purchase fresh ones!
Tourists often stop in nearby towns and wonder where to buy fresh oysters. Obviosuly, you can't get fresher than here – if you are lucky, maybe they’ll pull them right out of Schooner Bay for you! Oysters need very clean water to grow in, so this farm is a testament to just how wonderful Point Reyes is. Mark Johnson now runs the family business - strangely enough, he doesn’t eat oysters, just farms them.
