Blue Bay

The Blue Bay Hotel and Resort in Puerto Vallarta was an all-inclusive blast. From the excellent ocean views to the poolside bars, this hotel had everything we needed to make our spring break enjoyable without being too over-the-top crazy.

The rooms at the Blue Bay were very nice and clean. The beds were made perfectly each day and the marble-tiled floors were swept. The bathrooms were nice, with a marble shower and sink, but they could have greatly benefited from a dehumidifier or something of the sort. It was impossible to get rid of the steam and dampness once you showered.

The rooms that overlooked the seaside were the place to be, having balconies with views of the pool scene and sunsets. These rooms might have cost a little extra, but were well worth it.

Accommodations at the Blue Bay included all the food and beverages you could possibly imagine. Most of the fare ranged from upscale snack food (salsa everywhere) to well-planned breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. There were even several special "theme dinners." One was to commemorate St. Patrick’s Day (which occurred during my trip). Another night, our party was invited to eat in the resort's deluxe restaurant with its full gourmet Mexican menu. Both nights were very memorable occasions, with the staff doing everything within their power to make sure patrons were happy and well-entertained.

The pools and activities at the Blue Bay were top-notch. They offered a free scuba-diving lesson in one of their pools, which was a very fun experience. They also had tons of things to do, like volleyball tournaments, tequila shot limbo, aerobics, and more. They certainly made sure that their guests were entertained at all times.

The pools at the Blue Bay were located right next to the beach for a lovely view of the Pacific Ocean. The beach there was much too rocky and rough to swim in, but the deck and the pools were quite enough for me and the people I traveled with.

There was a small nightclub on the premises (with all drinks included), but if one were to venture off the property in search of nightlife, there were many means by which to do so. The hotel had a trolley that made stops around town at popular destinations. Cabs also could be taken and were rather inexpensive.

The Blue Bay was a great place for us to stay on our college spring break, without being in the middle of a crazy scene. It was relaxing and more family-oriented than the other all-inclusive places that market to out-of-control teenagers. We enjoyed our time there very much and would not hesitate to return again someday.

The Blue Bay Getaway is smaller than some of the monster resorts nearby in PV, but was nicely appointed with the expected pools, bars, and beaches.

As elsewhere, vendors peddling various knickknacks can be a hassle on the beach, but the pool is good for sunbathing and lounging around. This is an adult-only resort, so expect a lot of college-age party-goers in peak seasons.

The ocean-view room was nice, but the "standard" rooms are windowless cement blocks, which you may want to avoid.

The buffet was good and the à la carte restaurants pretty respectable. A cheesy but entertaining dance show is put on every night after dinner, and the various discos of Puerto Vallarta are within a five-minute cab ride.

For the price, it's a pretty good choice for partygoers headed to PV.

We stayed in an ocean-view room in the tower building. Very spacious room with king bed, cable TV, phone, nice bathroom and large shower. Included large balcony overlooking two pools, restaurants, stage (nightly shows) and the ocean. Relatively quiet with doors closed but some noise filtered in through the front door. Bring earplugs if desired - could be noisy if people get loud at the pool and surrounding bars, but our experience was that the noise died down after 10 and we were left with the soothing sound of the waves. Even before 10 it was never obnoxious. Usually heard just the sounds of people having fun or the crowd chanting "Uno Dos TRES!!" as patrons gulped Tequila shooters. Fun atmosphere. Despite the inclusive alcohol I never noticed anyone overly inebriated.

The resort has a large open-air lobby (with bar), a shallow wading pool (with bar and free daily SCUBA instruction), a larger pool with daily water-aerobics and "Tequila Vollyball."

Ocean kayaks are available for checkout (free) if surf conditions are tame enough. NOTE: This is an adults only resort and is "Topless Optional" although I only saw one woman topless there during the entire week. For those with kids the "Blue Bay Club" is owned by the same chain and is also located on the beach but is south of downtown. One note on the price - A sign in the lobby said rooms started at $200/night, but we were there on a package deal via Suntrips which was $1300 each including roundtrip air (Oakland/Puerto Vallarta), 7 nights hotel, and airport/hotel transfers. Not a bad deal considering all food/drinks and water sports and entertainment are included. I believe the Suntrips package was about $1150 each for a non-ocean view room.
