Excellent destination for a family trip with pre-school kids

We took a last minute trip over Christmas with our two preschoolers - 3 and 4 years old - and this a great trip The pool was perfect for little kids with several shallow areas and this cool "submerged platform thing" in the middle. The beach (down some steps) was huge with a small sheltered swimming area, but we didn't ever feel crowded. It is an all-inclusive so the food wasn't the best ever, but they had something good at every meal for both us and the kids - the "make-your-own-mimosoas" for breakfast was my personal favorite, and they had ice cream at lunch and at the snack bar with these tiny little cones so the kids got their snack without overdoing the sugar.
The hotel itself isn't the newest - the plumbing is a bit old so the toilets are hesitant, the hot water not consistent and the shower would come on all by itself unless you pushed the lever really hard - but it was immaculately maintained. The grounds were really beautiful.
The staff were all very helpful, friendly, and responsive. We chose this location in part because of the "kids club", but in the end didn't use it very much. We played with the kids at the pool or beach in the morning, then they were so tired they just collapsed after lunch for their nap. (I read 3 whole novels in 4 days - haven't done that since before kids!!!). But it was great to have the "Kids club" area where we took them to play sometimes, and a nice little play structure. And at night they had great kids parties!
We met several really lovely families there as well. Highly recommended!
All in All, a Good Resort

I stayed at the resort over the Thanksgiving weekend for 5 days. First of all, I was planning a trip for my family (wife, 3 year old, 8 month old) as well as my golfing brother and parents. I spent literally weeks searching for the best all-inclusive for the money. It was difficult since there were negative reviews on every resort, e.g., Riu Palace, Riu Santa Fe, Royal Solaris, Presidente Intercontinental and Crowne Plaza. I had finally narrowed it down to Riu Palace and Melia. I decided on Melia on these reasons: 1) I thought that there would be more families at Melia (vs. more party-goers at Palace) - Yes, there were a lot of families here and so we felt pretty comfortable here. 2) I wanted to be close to a golf course for my parents AND get a discount - All the internet sites said 10% off but we actually got 25% off (and almost 1/3 off for the second round). This was a huge plus as we saved almost $500. 3) Free shuttle - As others have said, they did not offer this, which was a shame but what are you going to do. So 2 out 3 isn't bad. As for the food, which I was really worried about when some people said it was unedible, it was not too bad. It was much better than the last all-inclusive I had gone to, Dreams Cancun. Yes, there were some items that were not good but there were some items that were good. And yes, the variety could be improved upon but what can you expect from an all-inclusive. Lastly, the service was exceptional.
Great Experience

My wife and I stayed here for 8 days. It was such a blast, we went with our friends and we had so much fun. The resort is beautiful, and the service and staff are excellent. The food was very good, especially the guacamole and the drinks are great as well. They have activities every day around the pool area, and they are a lot of fun if you get involved. The activities staff were very funny and they made us feel right at home. The rooms were very nice, and Kujira Restaurant was the best restaurant to eat at. We would definitely stay here again, no doubt about it!!!

The resort was nice. The Staff was extermely helpful and went out of their way to entertain all of the guests. The staff tried to get the guest involved on all daily activities. My husband participated on their water polo and volleyball almost everyday. We all tried the Zipline and other activities. Melia is one of the few resorts that actually wanted their guest to feel comfortable and enjoy their stay. Melia is about 15 minutes away from downtown in a car. The two times that we went to downtown for shopping and snorkeling, we used taxis. The rooms were clean and comfortable and they cleaned them daily.
