I started my trip in Rome, then went to Tuscany and Venice was truly the great ending of the trip. I spent two unforgettable days in Venice and I saw everything that I could possibly fit into 2 days.

You absolutely have to visit San Marco cathedral, Doge's palace, Museum Correr, Galleria Academia, Peggy Guggenheim collection, Ca' Rezonnico and Ca' d'Oro. These are really a must on your first trip.

Quick Tips:

For Venice you don't need any reservations. In the beginning of May there were some lines, but they were moving quickly and you didn't have t wait more than 15 minutes to get in anywhere. The cheaper places to grab a lunch are around the Rialto bridge, here the prices are comparable to smaller towns. San Marco square has the most expensive shops and restaurants. All I could do was window-shopping. Murano glass is everywhere and is quite expensive, they will also ship it for you if you choose to do so.

Best Way To Get Around:

Vaporetto is definitely the best and cheapest way to get around. The tickets can be bought for 1 trip or for a day and a family ticket (3 people) is a better value than if you were to buy 3 separate tickets. Tickets can be bought at any station during the day and on board at night. Also you can walk from one place to another on the same side of the Canal, the city is really not that big. You can also get to the airport and the train station St Lucia by vaporetto even at night. Vaporetto that goes to the airport goes from San Marco to the airport every hour starting at 4:35 am and costs 9.81 euros per person which is a much better deal than the taxi.
Venice
Located on the most fashionable street in Venice (kind of like Promenade des Anglais in Nice), this hotel used to be a Palace and became a hotel in 1822. It is located 2 minuters away from San Marco square. The building has a prominent red color and right in front of it is the vaporetto station "San Zaccharia". The hotel still has antique furniture in the lobby and on the floors, antique carpets and wall coverings. It has a really beautiful staircase and the view from the restaurant terrace on the roof is really great.

Now for the rooms.

The rooms are rather small and the bathrooms are very small. The bathtub is so narrow that it seems it was built for a child. In the beginning of May the radiators couldn’t be turned on and there was no place to dry our wet clothes and shoes after it was raining all day. The noise from the street at night could be heard very well with all the shutters shut. I was very disappointed with the accomodations. I could hardly call it the luxury collection, which is what Starwood calls it. The mattresses on the beds were very hard and I could feel the springs sticking out.

Overall, the location is obviously great but the hotel wasn’t worth the money it’s asking.

Combined entry ticket cost 9.5 euros

When you buy a ticket, it allows you entry in Doge’s Palace, Museum Correr, Archeological museum and the library. It is a combined ticket and I recommend that you visit all of the museums. So let’s start with Doge’s Palace.

Located literally right next door to San Marco Cathedral, this building doesn’t look very large from the outside, but only when you go through all the halls with painted ceilings and walls, Senate rooms, look at the size of each of these halls and what each doge tried to bring with him, you realize the enormity of all of this. The building was built in 14-15th centuries and is a real masterpiece of the Gothic architecture. The outside walls are made out of pick Verona marble and the first 2 floors are supported by white arches of colonnades. Inside the court shows the white stoned walls with statues and ornaments around each column, and a large gorgeous staircase with painted steps on the side which was used for ceremonies. Inside there are ceilings with frescoes by Tiepolo and a painting of Titian. I was really impressed by Sala del Maggior Consiglio, the hall of the great council, which is significantly larger than the Sistine Chapel and is covered with paintings. The eastern wall which is 25 by 81 ft has a painting by Tintorettos (father and son) of Paradise which is considered one of the largest paintings in the world. You also get a glance of the prison and can go inside a cell if you want.

This church has very plain look from the outside, the façade is made of brick and it doesn’t have much decoration. But it is one of the major sights in Venice. The entrance is to the side and when you enter, you are very much impressed by the numerous chapels, most with paintings by Titian, but even more than that this is the place of burial of Canova and Titian. Canova wanted to build a monument to Titian and he designed the marble pyramid in neo-classical style. But he died before he could implement it. So his pupils built a different monument to Titian which is grand and looks like one of the antique arcs with lots of statues, and they used Canova’s design for his own monument (you can see Canova’s original model in Museum Correr). The monument is very different from its surroundings and looks very modern compared to the rest of the church décor. The church also has very beautiful choir stalls that have wood carvings and the altar with Titian’s "Assumption of the Virgin."

Cost for the entry on the roof: 1.5 euros.

This was the grand finale of my vacation. The last day was San Marco. The trip was great. It started out with very interesting then switched to exciting, to amazing, to breathless, to speechless.

And San Marco became just that. The most amazing gorgeous cathedral I’ve seen on my trip. And I thought nothing could surprise me anymore. It still looks from outside just like it did on the 16-17th century paintings in Galleria Academia. All the frescoes on the ceiling and walls of the cathedral on the top part of the façade are made of mosaics with golden background. You can find here probably every bibleic story, it’s so huge. The styles of mosaics inside are different: some are closer to Byzantine, others are more of Renaissance reflection. There are several chapels, the altar is very large and you can see different types of columns behind it. The floors are put together as circles of increasing radii made up of marble pieces of different colors. As you walk up the stairs to the roof, you get to the balcony where the famous 4 horse statues of St Mark can be seen (the ones outside are copies and the originals are inside) and you can get an upclose look at the ceiling mosaics and the mosaics on the façade of the cathedral. You cannot take pictures but you can buy books or postcards inside which are inexpensive and are of good quality.

Attraction | "Santa Maria della Salute"

Open: 9 am – noon, 3 pm – 5:30 pm daily
This church was started in 1630 for the city recovery from plague and is called Salute because of that, since Salute means health, salvation. It took its architect, Baldassare Longhena, all his life to build it and it was finished in 1687, 5 years after his death. This is a very large Baroque church built at a great location where Grand Canal merges with St. Mark’s Basin. The church really shocks you with its size and grandeur but also with how light and bright everything is inspite of its size. It has magnificent floor patterns and a huge altar. The best thing about it are its chapels that have major paintings by Titian, Tintoretto and several other painters of that time. The church is made of white stone and it can be seen from any point of the city. The best pictures of the church come out if you can take them from the vaporetto as you are approaching it. The church is well lit during daytime and you are allowed to take pictures of the paintings inside. You can walk from Galleria Academia to Salute or you can take vaporetto # 1 to the stop at the stairs of the church.
