Ghent is a university city with about 230,000 inhabitants that maintains its medieval style. The central square, the St. Bavos Cathedral and the Medieval Castle are its major attractions, but for me, Ghent give me the opportunity to be in a Belgium city without millions of tourists (like Bruges).

Why bother comparing it with Brugge or Brussels? Its history is very different and so is its appeal. . .and it really is great and gracious.

Beyond the nice shops, grand squares and beautiful Cathedral Ghent has some great pubs... and one exceptional pub... Het Waterhuis aan de Bierkant, Groente Markt 9... just opposite nice Cathedral in fact... for those who like a little stronger fortification there is a sister Jenever bar round the corner

We “stopped over” for an afternoon in Ghent on our way back from Bruges to Brussels. After all the charm of Bruges and the countryside of Flanders, Ghent was a bit of a disappointment. Our day was dreary, our expectations high; therefore, we may have set ourselves up for disappointment. Ghent is described as a city with an energetic student population. While students dotted the city, we somehow didn’t feel the energy this city is supposed to retain. Maybe the mood of the local population was affected by the gray skies as well!
