- The prim and proper city meets the wild and rugged coast on beautiful Vancouver Island. After the ferry crossing from Vancouver, we took in the English charm of Victoria and then took a little road trip, passing through Pacific Rim National Park on our way to secluded Tofino.

- Lovely, heavily forested and canyon-laced Vancouver Island has a lot to offer besides the capitol city of Victoria. This journal describes a circle tour via both of mainland Vancouver’s principal ferry terminals and an overland rail cruise between Victoria and the tranquil, laid-back port of Nanaimo.

- Nestled peacefully along the eastern coast of central Vancouver Island, Campbell River has long been known as the Salmon Capital of the World. This peaceful fishing and logging area was the “Relaxation Destination” for Hollywood’s rich and famous during the 1940’s and early 1950’s. Bing Crosby, Clark Gable, Bob Hope, Carole Lombard and William Randolph Hearst escaped to this fantastic natural destination surrounded by beauty and wonder.

- The east side of the Island is more developed than the west and has many more accommodations and attractions. Although Victoria and Nanaimo are the main cities, the area north to Campbell River has lots to offer and makes for an interesting few days tour.

- I had great expectations about Vancouver Island and I was not disappointed. We went in mid-October and were rewarded with blue skies, few tourists, one grey whale, and gorgeous autumn color.

- There are many kayaking outfitters in British Columbia. I had the opportunity to kayak for a week off the northern tip of Vancouver Island with Northern Lights Expeditions.
