- When I first set foot on this small Caribbean island in the summer of 1999, it was broken. (My foot, that is.) My husband and I were so overwhelmed by the genuine concern and helpfulness of the island's inhabitants that we returned this summer to get to know them better.

- We stayed for one week at the Hermitage Plantation. Off season, there were no crowds -- we often had restaurants to ourselves. Nevis is a beautiful, tiny island and easy to navigate if you rent a car (watch out for crabs crossing the roads!). The island is clean and friendly, but expensive.

- My wife and I went to Nevis for a friend's wedding. I had to get a globe to see where it was. I have been to Hawaii, other Caribbean islands, and nothing compares to its tranquility. The perfect getaway from everyday life. Worth every penny.

- Nevis is a lesser-traveled island in the West Indies, it's nearest neighbor is St. Kitts. It's not as easy to get to as, say Jamaica butif you like the leisure lifestyle, this is the place to be.

- Summer finds a peaceful, quiet island, and the writer recommends a screaming value in the sun, IF you can stand all that peace.

- This island is often linked with neighboring island St. Kitts, and is the one with the best beaches and lots of history.
