I had a week's holiday exploring the north of the North Island here in my homeland of New Zealand. There is ocean on both coasts, and many harbours. Early history of contact between Maori and Pakehais evident. Forests of giant kauri used to stand tall.

"It was one of those days-- so silent, so still, you almost feel the earth itself has stopped in astonishment at its own beauty." This quote by Katherine Mansfield aptly sums up my feeling standing in the midst of Thermal Springs & Pools at Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve outside Rotorua. Add to that a Maori Hangi Concert, followed by pink marshmallows and chocolate hedgehogs at Chez Bleu, then a dip in a private thermal bath at Princes Gate Hotel, and you've got a near perfect day.
