- I spent a week as a volunteer on this magical bird sanctuary island near Auckland and you can too! Or you can just visit for a day, if you want to get a glimpse of some of New Zealand's rarest birds in a wonderful setting.

- New Zealand is a beautiful country with a population of approximatley 3 1/2 million people, over 1 million living in the Auckland area. It consists of 2 main islands, the North and South and right at the bottom is Stewart Island, a trampers paradise.

- I had a week's holiday exploring the north of the North Island here in my homeland of New Zealand.
There is ocean on both coasts, and many harbours. Early history of contact between Maori and Pakehais evident. Forests of giant kauri used to stand tall.

- "It was one of those days-- so silent, so still, you almost feel the earth itself has stopped in astonishment at its own beauty." This quote by Katherine Mansfield aptly sums up my feeling standing in the midst of Thermal Springs & Pools at Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve outside Rotorua. Add to that a Maori Hangi Concert, followed by pink marshmallows and chocolate hedgehogs at Chez Bleu, then a dip in a private thermal bath at Princes Gate Hotel, and you've got a near perfect day.
