- A last-minute weekend trip to Toulouse opened my eyes to startling differences between the south of France and Paris. A laid-back vibe, friendly locals, and excellent cuisine made the city a terrific surprise!

- Spend a day in Toulouse and take in the elegant red brick architecture of St Sernin, sit by the Garonne and sip coffee, wander down the backstreets of the town, visit the boutiques and workshops, and sample the gastronomic delights of the region in Capitole square.

- Toulouse is often called "La ville en rose" (city in pink) since most buildings are rose red brick. The city is pretty, but not particularly memorable. Make it a day trip on the way to Carcassonne.
