- The only Malaysian state with an ethnic Chinese majority offers historical buildings, nature, and a wonderful Buddhist complex. It should be high on the to-do list for any visitor of Malaysia.

- My original title was to be “Penang-chiak-gao-peng” (eat until you drop), for that was what we did in the 3 days that we were there. Our Penangite host/friend took great pleasure in filling our stomachs with cheap and yummy food and showing us the rich culture and history of Penang.

- Penang, they say, is the pearl of the Orient. Never mind that they say that of many other places: Hong Kong, Philippines, Goa, and Sri Lanka. But this is the real McCoy. Penang is exotica at its best- Chinese, Malay and Brit, a blend that's colourful, effervescent, and immensely likeable.

- Quieter, greener and much more interesting than KL can ever hope to be, Penang fascinated me from the moment I stepped off the ferry. What’s really striking is the wonderfully Chinese flavour of the entire island- you almost feel you aren’t in Malaysia any more.

- I always like the heritage buildings and beaches of Penang. It is like the feeling of old and new mixed together.

- Insight into the beach village life in northern Penang. Hawkers food, parasailing, and restful hotels that hide away from the neon-lit, large hotel monstrosities.

- Having fond memories of the late '80s here, I was worried that Penang had been bulldozed or sanitized. I was glad it has resisted and flourished.
