Ninety kilometers south of Chiang Rai, Phayao offers an excellent base for exploring an area dotted with national parks which have been almost completely neglected by western tourists. Phayao Lake is a picturesque spot in the mornings and at sunset. The cultural center gives an excellent insight into local life, both past and present.
