Palenque is in the state of Chiapas. The town itself has little of interest, but the ruins just outside of town, also called Palenque, are fantastic. Not too far outside of town are the waterfalls of Misol-Ha and Agua Azul.

Palenque is one of the most beautiful Mayan sites in South Mexico. But it is also one of the main tourist attractions and very busy!

The small city of Palenque does not have much to offer, except use as a gateway to the ruins or waterfalls. Traditional restaurants have high tourist prices. There are typical tourist shops and many shoe stores.

Instead of doing the usual partying for mardi gras, we decided to take a road trip from Mérida, Yucatan, to the jungles of Chiapas.

Ruins, waterfalls, and some dismal nightclubs! Palenque is a lovely village with so many things to see, while maintaining its personality and avoiding overt tourism.

The ancient Mayan city of Palenque is in a breathtaking jungle setting. The ancient ruins offer some awe-inspiring views, and the modern city a modest but comfortable base to see the sights from.

Palenque is one of the most stunning sites bequeathed by the Maya to the modern world. An ancient city surrounded by thick jungle, which is gradually revealing itself through continual archaeological excavations. What else do you need? Well there is the great accommodation and famous waterfalls.
