Even though Sønderborg is about as far away from Copenhagen as one can get in Denmark (and that isn't very far), it definitely doesn't want for history, interesting things to see and do, and shopping -- everything you expect from big cities. Located just across the fjord from Germany, this area was in German hands between 1864 and 1920 and under German occupation from 1940 to 1945. As a result, this area of Denmark might very well be called the most patriotic in the country.

Sønderborg is the largest community in the region and is located half on the mainland and half on the island of Als. It is home to the old fortress and castle, Sønderborg Slot. It is also home to a busy port. Check out this gateway to northern Germany!
