Lithuania’s verdant capital contains a stunning array of ornate churches in its UNESCO-listed baroque Old Town, excellent museums, and a quirky atmosphere that is at once sophisticated and charmingly provincial. Consequently, it’s one of the nicest and most rewarding places to visit – anywhere.

Arriving in Vilnius by air, one is greeted by a large tarmac apron far in excess of the air traffic now supported. It is a leftover from the Soviet era, when Vilnius was a rather large Russian airbase.

Vilnius was the last of the capitals on our ciruit of the Baltic States. Despite our worries of cultural overkill Vilnius was so different to the other cities--it has a much more cosmopolitan makeup and offers an incredible mixture of European and Russian/Soviet architecture and culture.
