- While doing all the well-known sights is important, we also like to discover some unusual areas in a city we are visiting and we did this in Santiago. Here are three suggestions and also some information about getting around this sprawling city.

- We sometimes forget when planning a trip how important cityscapes can be when visiting a different country. While knowing nothing about the buildings in Santiago before we arrived there, when walking around we discovered some gems worth talking about.

- While Santiago perhaps lacks the spectacular attractions found in a few South American cities, there is a good collection of old churches, museums, parks and palaces to create plenty of interest. Here are five selections.

- By the time we reached Santiago we were ready for a little luxury. We discovered this in the up-market hotels but also found some excellent budget eateries which had plenty of atmosphere.

- Santiago is a great base from which to explore the rest of Chile. Be sure to stay a night or two and sample the food and nightlife in the neighborhoods of Las Condes or Bellavista before you head off to the rest of the country.

- Thick smog tends to cover Santiago and its people in an ugly light. You may have to plunge through the surface to appreciate what this city, bursting with culture and awakening from political hardship, has to offer. Living in Santiago for 4 months allowed me to do just that.
