- When heading out of Jorge Chavez Airport Lima may seem like a grey, polluted, crime-ridden city. However, there are many gems in the city, not the least of which are it's warm friendly people.

- Lima and New Jersey somehow have the same reputation--each one is considered the armpit of its country. But without spending time in Peru’s fast-paced, thriving (and yes, polluted and poverty-ridden) capital instead heading straight to the Sacred Valley, you forgo the real, raw Peru for its sparkling, tourist-ridden counterpart.

- Suddenly single at 35, I was free to explore the rest of the world! Eager to embrace a foreign culture and language, I chose South America for my first adventure. My brother, 21, a stranger when I left home, decided to join me. Lima was our intimidating introduction to Peru.

- Miraflores is a district of the city of Lima, Peru. Known for its shopping areas, gardens, flower-filled parks and beaches, it is one of the upscale areas in the city. It is the most popular accommodation location for visitors to the city.

- History has not always been kind to central Lima. There have been earthquakes, fires and many skirmishes over the years and many buildings suffered neglect. In recent years the government has devoted quite a bit of effort and now some buildings and areas are great attractions again.

- The massive Plaza de Armas has been the centre of Lima since 1535. It has served as an open-air theatre, a bull ring and a killing field for people sentenced to death by the Spanish Inquisition. Now it is a premier tourist attraction.
