- A single building can’t completely change a city, but Frank Gehry’s justly admired Guggenheim Museum certainly has altered Bilbao’s reputation. Blessed with outstanding contemporary architecture that complements its atmospheric old town, Bilbao is unusually charming for a large city and makes an excellent base for exploring the Basque Country.

- From Gernika, Spain, the backdrop of Picasso's famous painting, drive to Mundaka (a legendary surf town) and then on to Bermeo, where the flavor of strong Basque nationalism can be felt. Nevertheless, this should not put anyone aback, even the staunchest anti-Basque.

- Two friends, the wife, and myself wanted a weekend away and happened upon Bilbao. We chose Bilbao as it was cheap to fly to from Bristol, and we were very pleased with what we discovered.
