The Charm of Kolkata

Created by phileasfogg on December 8, 2002

  • Kolkata- or, as much of the world still calls it, Calcutta- is a city of amazing diversity. A city distinctly Indian, but with a noticeably colonial feel to it. Warm, charming, and the sort of place you can actually fall in love with in just two days.

The city of Godess Kali and her divine devotees

Created by Vaidya on August 23, 2005

  • Calcutta is the abode of Goddess Kali. It is said to be the place where the finger of the goddess fell when she was badly wounded. Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa was a devotee of the Mother Goddess. There are umpteen places in Kolkata for a devotee to get immersed into the same atmosphere as the erstwhile divine devotees.

On the Biryani trail

Created by Vaidya on August 2, 2005

  • Kolkata’s brush with Biryani, I have read, started when the British deposed one of the kings of Avadh (present-day Lucknow) to this city. I presume that he must have taken his cooks along. It is well known that ‘the Kolkata biryani’ has the distinctive ‘adapted Mughal’ touch. I was dying to relish it at a good, economical, down-to-earth, popular eatery. I had done a good research and was happily rewarded, I must say.

Really wonderful!

Created by zahid888 on October 5, 2004

  • Actually, it is quite tough to describe in a short brief. You find an ancient city with the joy of beauty in one of the oldest cities in the world. People are very friendly, and there are lots of things to see here. Really enjoyable.
