In his brilliant book 'Notes from a Small Island' Bill Bryson wonders why he'd never heard much about Durham and suggests a visit should be made with haste. I had a similar experience and after seeing it for myself, I echo his sentiment. Go there - immediately, it's superb.

Working With Nature in County Durham

Beach and sightseeing holidays are great, but this time I felt like being more active. The working holiday organised by British Trust for ~Conservation Volunteers seemed perfect. Working a bit, cooking together, in the beautiful Durham Dales. I came home tired but refreshed and satisfied.
