On this second trip to Bali, I decided to base myself in Ubud to immerse myself in the arts, crafts, and culture.. and I was not wrong. Ubud is beautiful and exciting, and the people warm and friendly. In this journal I showcase some of the memorable highlights.

Looking at all the photographs we took, I realized that we had seen and done so much more than I committed to paper (or in this case, webjournal). Ubud in Bali continues to be a benchmark for all the places we visit. It is peerless.

I had been importing handmade papers from Ubud and decided to combine this business trip with leisure. Had I known that it would affect both of us so deeply within our core, I would have prolonged the stay.

Most of our time was spent in Ubud, the arts and culture center of Bali. A highlight was our beautiful river villa at Kupu Kupu Barong. We experienced river rafting, children practicing for the traditional Balinese dance, and great shopping and massages. What more could you want?

Having last visited Ubud in 1999 and leaving with fond memories we were looking forward to visiting this town again. But how we were disappointed. It has changed so much that it has become a sprawling, congested, and very touristy Balinese village definitely aiming at the top-end tourist dollar.

The map of Bali in my Lonely Planet is to scale. Destinations may seem far, but it's only 2 hours from places of interest to places of interest.
