Okay, I know it's not advisable to go into the back country alone, but sometimes you just have to get away from it ALL, and this 10-mile wilderness loop from Summit Lake in Lassen Volcanic National Park is a perfect weekend trek for solitude.

Mt. Lassen is one of the less-developed national parks - fairly uncrowded, commercialized or over-hyped. It's a great weekend destination for Northern California or Oregon. It's a dormant (though not dead) volcano, and the park is filled with all sorts of volcanic wonders.
