- Florence, at the edge of massive sand dunes, is gateway to Oregon Dunes Recreation Area, where dune buggy is king. Ten miles north, rocky coastal caves and cliffs are home to herds of Steller sea lions. In Old Town Florence on the Siuslaw River, fishermen sell albacore tuna dockside.

- Florence area makes a great vacation base for travellers of all ages.
Sand dunes, sea lions and Oregon's most photographed lighthouse are all within a half hour drive away.

- I've spent many summers camping and exploring the sand dunes and hiking trails in Florence.

- You can check in early to this Victorian lightkeeper's house with cozy fireplaces and hot chocolate. After sunset, walk a few yards to the base of the lighthouse and watch the light rotate. Breakfast was a gourmet, seven-course meal.
