Afternoon Tea in Timbouctou

Created by HELEN001 on March 28, 2006

  • Timbouctou, legendary goal of many 19th-century explorers, once a city of commerce, trade, and wealth is now a small town reliant on tourism and threatened by the encroaching Sahara. Roughly 900km NE of Bamako, Timbouctou is currently the focus of an extensive building renovation and civic improvement programme.

Timbuktu - The mysterious city on the edge of the Sahara

Created by Invicta73 on September 30, 2003

  • The renowned efforts of many explorers to reach Timbuktu have given it a legendary reputation that nowadays draws travellers, and I felt that my stay in Mali would be incomplete without visiting. Although nowhere could possibly live up to such hype, the small city does actually have a distinctive charm.

Timbuktu, Mali

Created by drumzspace on April 29, 2005

  • Timbuktu was our staging area before taking off to the Festival au Desert (see my other Timbuktu entry). We spent 2 days touring around the city and saw all we needed to see in this famous "remote" location.

Festival in the Desert

Created by drumzspace on April 29, 2005

  • Each year, a music festival is held in Essakane, 70km into the Sahara desert from Timbuktu (yes, there really is a Timbuktu). This year, the timing was right, and I was afforded the opportunity to fly to Mali and attend the Festival au Desert.

Mythical Tombouctou

Created by jurgen on August 9, 2001

  • Tombouctou (Timbuktu), the mythical city on the south of the Sahara. It's a lot of trouble to get there.. and there is nothing there to see. But still it's worth it.
