This is a land of extreme's! Wild beaches in hidden coves--or extending for 20 miles--hug the rainforest while glaciers reach down into the tropics. It's most noticeable at Fox Glacier, where waterfalls and rainforest meet at the terminal ice. Barefoot one moment and clampirons on boots the next....

After visiting friends in the North Island I decided to hook up with the Magic Bus travel company for a whistle stop tour of New Zealand's most rugged attractions along the South Island’s “Wild” West Coast.

The West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island is not on some tourist routes but we were impressed by how much this area offered. There is interesting history, some rugged coastline and great mountain scenery. Best of all is the opportunity to walk on a glacier.
