- We spent September on the fringes of Iowa’s capital city, Des Moines. Idyllic little Berwick is like a time-warp backwards 50 years. The Amana Colonies, 90 miles east, recall yet an earlier time, 150 years ago, when German settlers founded seven communal villages along the Iowa River.

- Two adjacent lakes and towns in northwest Iowa bear the name Okoboji. At the southeastern tip of the prairie pot-holes region, they’re a prime vacation area featuring seven good-sized lakes and limitless water recreation opportunities. For those so inclined, there are excellent bike trails and several amusement parks.

- Though a far cry from visiting the Netherlands, Tulip Time in May and Sinterklaas festivities in December solidly ground Pella in Dutch (hollands) heritage. Architecture, canals, windmills, klokkenspel, and Dutch surnames on shops that sell imported Dutch items reinforce the Dutch theme.

- Melodious-sounding Oskaloosa in south-central Iowa was where my husband Bob was born and raised. A pretty town on the divide between the Des Moines and South Skunk Rivers, it’s surrounded by cornfields as is much of Iowa.
