Aleppo is Syria's second city after Damascus, and, although they are in the same country today, the two cities have very different pasts, which has created two very different cities. With old souks, mosques, and a citadel, Aleppo is a history lover's dream.

I spent a week in Aleppo. I only intended to stay a couple of days. It's a great place to experience an old and flourishing Islamic city, with hardly a hint of tourist hassle.

My husband and I joined Encounter Overland in London, England for a 7 1/2 week tour to Cairo, Egypt. There were 19 others on this rough camping trip. We took turns preparing our own food and cooking. The main focus of the journey was Turkey, Syria, Jordan and Egypt.
