We spent an afternoon in Heidelberg visiting the Castle, the Market Place and an out of town beer garden. A quick walking tour left us wanting to see more but unfortunately we had a train to catch back to Frankfurt Airport.

Even if you have no interest in its university, Heidelberg has enough charm to win your heart. This is a great walking city that's visually very appealing. src= http://www.igougo.com/photos/journal_photos/Im004599.jpg width =300 height=200 >

For generations, Heidelberg has stood as a symbol of romanticism the world over. The “city with a heart” has been praised in poems, songs and anecdotes. Located along the Neckar River in southwestern Germany, it is a hub of manufacturing, transportation, education, research and cultural activities. The romantic image of the city was further enhanced when it provided the dramatic backdrop for the play, and later the Sigmund Romberg musical, The Student Prince.

“Felsenmeer” means ‘sea of granite’ in German. Used by the Roman masons as a granite quarry, signs of the masons can still be seen today. Large granite boulders pour down the whole side of a hill. Clambering from boulder to boulder, one doesn’t even have to touch the ground.
