- The Banks Peninsula near Christchurch makes for an interesting side trip. Akaro, whose name means 'long harbour' in Maori, is less than 50 miles from Christchurch, and unlike many cities in New Zealand, is actually founded by the French, so many of its streets are likewise named. Lyttleeton Harbor, Christchurch's port, has good coffee shop and a nice sidewalk.
