- We were on a fairly limited budget after having just paid for our wedding in the Czech republic. Funded from the presents of our guests we booked a last minute flight to the medieval city.

- The Midi Canal is an ancient waterway connecting many small towns of southern France. It is still used, mainly by tourists, and provides a romantic, scenic trip by boat or car.

- We did not go to Carcassonne itself; the sun was blazing down in the nineties and we could not face the drive. We are planning for next April - but less than 40 miles North there are some wonderful places, some described in this journal.

- The old medieval city of Carcassonne is truly out of a fairy tale. Though reconstructed fairly recently (in the last century), it still remains a more-than-impressive and quite aesthetic representation of the medieval period.
