- A trip to Rhodes Old Town is a must if you're on the island. We tramped around the city for hours but didn't see everything.

- This was our third day tour of the island and there's much to commend itself to the island outside of Old Rhodes Town.

- The Acropolis overlooks the town of Lindos, its sheer cliffs presenting a formidable obstacle for would-be raiders throughout history. Greeks, Byzantines, Romans, and, of course, the fabled Knights of St John have all left their mark upon this magical place, the highlight of which is the Temple of Athena Lindia.

- Few visitors venture into the interior of this beautiful island, a great pity indeed. We took a full day's road trip to explore some lesser-known beaches, then swing inland to find the bustling town of Archangelos, Petaloudes, the Valley of the Butterflies, and the sprawling Minoan remains at Kameiros.

- Albeit a well-worn phrase, Lindos really is impossibly beautiful - a clutter of pink-, blue-, and white-washed houses form a maze of narrow alleys lined with shops, bars, restaurants, and tavernas, overlooked by its ancient Acropolis. From any angle, it presents a picture-postcard view unlike anywhere else in the Greek islands.

- Mandraki Harbour is so quintessentially Greek--ancient windmills, a knights' fortress, fountains, churches, and clock towers surround it on both sides. Fishing boats offload their catches as they've done for centuries, and yachts disgorge their well-heeled owners whilst kaikia cut through the azure water on day trips to the Dodecanesian islands.

- Rhodes Old Town is simply breathtaking: a beautifully preserved medieval walled city containing churches, mosques, grand squares, fountains, temples, palaces, and houses, all depicting the era when the knights were the principal peace-keepers in the Greek Isles. To wander its stone streets is to be at one with history here.

- Asklipeio still does things the traditional way, as they have been done for centuries. Overlooked by a ruined knight's castle, this sleepy village about 5 miles inland from Kiotari reputedly makes the best bread on Rhodes and has an amazing Byzantine church, so exploration was order of the day.
