- Here I was at one of the world's most famous abbies and - feeling most irreverent. The watchtower walls and stone parapets put me in touch with my inner Peter Pan. I wanted to run, fly and fight pirates.

- The town itself is touristy, but you can find deals on local items, Calvados, Bisquits and lace. Don't miss the chapel on the way up to the Abbey. Do the tour of the Abbey, as the monks give more insight than a self-guided tour. Eat at Auberge Saint-Pierre.

- After crossing the Atlantic on the new QM2 (see cruise journal), we took the Brittany ferry to Saint Malo and visited Mont Saint Michel where we had time to visit the abbey, walk around the mount, and experience the high spring tides.
